Freedom

What would you be willing to give up so that others might be free?

This question was asked of me two years ago in a leadership class... below is how I answered.

I would be willing to give up my freedom for the freedom of others. I guess if I wasn’t willing to do that I am in the wrong profession. The freedom’s we have, as Americans, are many and they are taken for granted everyday. Our freedoms’ are based on a document over 200 years old. The Declaration of Independence is our nations common vision. There have been many before me give-up everything to defend the freedoms’ guaranteed in the constitution and I am here to do the same.

When I came across this today it made me realize again why I volunteered and why everyone in Iraq volunteered. We are in the military to serve this great nation and protect its freedoms. If that means fighting a war in Iraq because our Commander in Cheif sees a threat to peace and freedom... then by all means I will fight.

As I was pondering this I was reminded of the only true freedom humans can have. The freedom of knowing Jesus Christ came to this earth, the only son of God, fully God and fully man, lived a perfect life, died voluntarily as a substitute for my own sins, and bore the totality of the punishment I deserved. Only he could do it, only he is God.

"Jesus said, 'If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'" -- John 8:31-32

I imagine God might answer something like this if he was asked the question, "What would you give up so that others might be free?"
GOD: I would let my only son suffer and die on a cross because I love the people of the world. I want to spend eternity with them if only they would accept the truth and choose me over the pleasures of the world.

"For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever belives in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." -- John 3:16
