I must explain my absense... I have been in Kansas City since Wednesday and have only had time to sit down and check my email twice. I only have time now to make a short post saying that part two of my story will be coming in the next couple days. I am leaving Kansas City tomorrow to go to Manhattan. Then to home on Wednesday. Since I got here I have been spending time with friends and family that I will not get to see again for sometime after I leave for Biloxi and then in November to England. It has been a great stay here and I wish I could stay longer but all good things come to an end as they say. I will post more about my trip at another day...

My Story

My Story Part One

I have read a few online testimonies in a couple blogs so I decided to post mine in case anyone was interested. So the following is the first part of two posts that will be my online testimony. If you have looked around my site at all you may have read this already because it is in here.

Where Have I Been?

If you are looking at this page, you, for some reason want to know more about where I came from. Well, I grew up in a small town in Northwest Kansas on a farm. That's right... I am a farmboy at heart. Please don't equate farmboy with hick. Farms today are more advanced and complicated than many industries. Most farmers are knowledgable in chemistry, horticulture, operations management, engine repair, machine operation, finance, accounting, commodities, etc. You get the point. Anyway... that was just to prove my point that farmers don't have to be hicks.

Growing up I decided I probably never wanted to be a farmer. I thought it took way to much effort for way to little return. I'll always have a special place in my heart for the farm though. I will also always have a special place in my heart for small towns. I am who I am today because of the wonderful home I had but also because of the environment of a small town.

I grew up going to church at the First United Methodist Church in Hoxie, Kansas. Pretty much went because my Mom took me. When I got to Junior High I started going to a JH Youth Group with all my friends from another church. As a result of this group I started to understand what it meant to live for Jesus. I had known for a long time that Jesus died on the cross for my sins and that I needed to ask for forgiveness of those sins but I really didn't understand what implications that had on everyday life. I thought if I followed the 10 commandments then everything else would be hunky dory. Well... that is a good start but come to find out about 7 years later there is much more to it.

In high school I continued to go to Youth Group but it was more of a social gathering than anything else. I pretty much quit going to church except for holidays and a few other occasions. I played football, wrestled and ran track during school and worked for my dad in the summer along with being a lifeguard. Pretty normal except I didn't drink, not one sip all four years of high school. I personally think it is sad that drinking to get drunk is normal among high school students. However, high school was a pretty spiritually dry time in my life. I had sin in my life that I didn't want to deal with so I pushed God away so i wouldn't feel convicted.

I really enjoyed high school actually... most of my classmates couldn't wait to leave but I knew I would miss it. And I did... for awhile... 'til I realized how awesome college was. However... college really wasn't that awesome my freshman year. I hated my classes and it showed in my grades.

Even though I will always consider Hoxie my home... I don't know if I could ever live there again. At least not for awhile.

Many big decisions were made during high school about my future... among them was to attend Kansas State University and join the Air Force ROTC. I also chose to major in Computer Engineering (the reason why my freshman year was not that fun), which was NOT COOL!

I'll post part two later on this week.

Colorado Trip

Vail is an amazing place! I love being in Colorado! I went to vail this past weekend to visit some friends of mine and do some camping. Last summer I lived in Vail for two months. I was on a summer mission project with Campus Crusade for Christ and it was absolutely amazing. But that is another story for another time.

I went to Vail this weekend with three other friends and we met up with 3 people we new who are living in Vail this summer. It was a really good time. The four of us from Kansas camped out near Vail Friday and Saturday night. Saturday morning we hiked up to Booth Falls. It is a 60 foot water fall about 2 miles north of Vail on a very beautiful hiking trail. I had been there 3 times before but it was just as amazing and exilerating this time as the first three.

Saturday afternoon we went swimming in the indoor pool where my friends are living. Good times. That evening we wanted to ride the Gondola up to the top of Vail mountain but somebody was having a wedding at the top of the mountain and nobody was allowed to go up unless you had an invitation. I can't even begin to imagine how much it would cost to rent the top of Vail Mountain for a day to have a wedding. I am guessing well over six figures.

So instead of going to the top of the mountain we went to Beaver Creek which is by Avon just down the road from Vail and ate dinner at the Coyote Cafe. After dinner three of us decided to go ice skating at the rink in the center of Beaver Creek. I hadn't been ice skating in a long time and the last time I went was in a small rink in Manhattan, KS that left little to be desired. I can now say that I went ice skating on the first day of summer! It wasn't cold. I was in a t-shirt and shorts. The people that didn't skate and just watched got cold watching. It was probably in the upper 40's.

Sunday we got up early and left for Kansas because some of the guys had an 11 hour drive in front of them to get home. It was a great weekend and it was awesome seeing old friends. This coming weekend I am going to Kansas City to see all my friends and family on the east end of the state before I leave for Keesler AFB in Mississippi.

I report for duty on the 22nd of July and I am quite excited. I feel very blessed however to have all this time to visit friends and family before I leave for two years. God is good.

Great Weekend

I had a really great weekend... and I am just now getting around to posting about it. Some friends from college came and visited me here in Hoxie. Pretty much all my friends live over 3.5 hours away so it was pretty cool that they came. Jeremiah, Becky and Rachel made the trip and we had a great time hanging out. We did all kinds of fun stuff. I let the girls ride in the tractor with me. We went and gathered malberry's to make jelly with. We went and picked cherries. I gave the girls a tour of the farm on the four wheeler. We had a whinnie roast and made s'mores. We also sat in my parents hot tub. It was just an all around fun weekend.

I finally got some pictures posted here on my website. Click here to view the first of many albums I will be posting on this website.

I am heading out to Colorado this weekend to visit some friends in Ft. Collins and in Vail. Should be good times!! Won't be back 'til late Sunday so I'll try and post about it on Monday... if I am not busy helping my dad. Have a great weekend folks!

not recently so I don't remember...

5. What's one talent/skill you don't have but always wanted?
I want to be able to play the piano or guitar... maybe someday...

I've been pretty busy lately... I am preparing to move to England and that is quite a task. I have also been quite busy helping my dad with the farm. It rained yesterday so there wasn't much to do today. Some friends of mine are visiting me this weekend which will be good. I like living at home but there is only so much I can take of only seeing my parents everyday. (Mom and Dad... if you are reading this don't get me wrong... I like living at home but I am really used to being surrounded by peers and not parents). I just wanted to post just for the sake of posting... no wisdom or deep thoughts today... not that I have wisdom or deep thoughts any other time...

New Car

I've went and done it... I've purchased a new car! Well, I haven't actually purchased it yet but I am going to tomorrow. My uncle is good friends with this guy who is a car salesman at a Ford dealer in the eastern part of the state... so I called my uncle last night and told him I was interested in a new car and I was hoping he could help me find a good deal. He called me back today and said he had found me a good deal. So I am just going to say I got a good deal on a 2002 Ford Explorer XLS, dark green. Would've rather had a blue one but one can't be to picky when you are shopping for deals. So below is picture... not of the one I am getting but of the model mentioned. I am sure you have all seen them before... pretty common on the road these days! I am so excited! The only thing is I am working myself into more debt and I am not even getting paid yet... ahh... but buying stuff for the reality of life is fun... at least it is now... knowing that in just over a month I am going to be getting a pretty decent pay check that will help me pay off my debt and knowing that I have a guaranteed job for the next 4 years helps. Getting approved for the loans I've gotten have been quite simple... just telling my bank that I am a new 2nd Lt and them saying oh ok... no problem. So... tomorrow I am taking a little trip to finalize the deal... and to stop in Manhattan and pick up a few things that i left cause they wouldn't all fit in my car when I came home. So it is road trip time once again...

Oh... my Mom went to Colby today and she is supposed to get me a USB cable so I can hook my scanner... so I will be able to post some pictures soon... As I type this I realize that since I am going to Manhattan tomorrow and I have a USB cable in Manhattan that there is no need for my mother to pick me up one but I am guessing it to late to stop her... oh well... guess I'll have an extra.

One Day Picture

Well, I made the One Day website. It is not the best picture in the world but somebody liked it. I am the guy with the blue thing on his head and wearing a blue shirt. It is actually a t-shirt sleeve I got wet and put on my head to help keep me cool. The guy standing next to me in the brown shirt and sunglasses is my friend Josh Smith. He just graduated also and is going on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ. Cool guy. The other two people I went with are standing on the other side of me. Guess they didn't make the cut! HA!

I am already starting to miss college life. Nothing I can do in Hoxie, Kansas can compare to hanging out with tons of people just about anytime I wanted.

As soon as I get my scanner working I will start posting a few pics of the recent events in my life. All I need is a USB cable but the nearest computer store is about 35 miles away. You gotta love small town life!

Being Bold in Faith

As I was driving the tractor today I came across the Kansas State High School State track meet on the radio. I have always loved track and I knew some people competing so I decided to listen to the coverage. The broadcasters were interviewing the winners after each race trying in vain to talk to these athletes who just gave everything they had and could barely talk let alone give full sentences on live radio. One particular fella, I believe his name was Andrew Benton, from Jackson Heights Kansas, a small 2A school, won the 800 meter run and he came from behind to do it.

RADIO GUY: Great job Andy! How do you feel!?
ANDY: Good... (gasp)
RADIO GUY: Tell the listeners about that last 60 meters. How did you come from behind to win?
ANDY: Well, (gasp) my coach shared some scripture with me today from Philippians. (gasp) Philippians 4:13 says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." I just kept saying that verse in my head over and over as I ran and when it came down to the last hundred I found my strength in the Lord and just kept pushing. (gasp) All credit for this win goes to God the Father.
RADIO GUY: So it was just a matter of will?
ANDY: No, it was a matter of me and my faith and trusting in God. He gave me strength. I did nothing. Jesus gets the credit on this one.
RADIO GUY: Well, there you have it folks...

The radio guy really didn't know how to respond to that one... While Andy was talking I was pumping my fist cheering him on. I had never been so happy for someone I have never met. He stood up for Christ today on public radio. What a stud!!

All this got me thinking... I have always wanted to coach track... I really think that when I get out of the Air Force I am going to come back to Kansas and teach at some small school and coach as many sports as I can so I can have an eternal impact on as many kids as I can. It also made me think of my High School track coach Mr. Tom Friess and what an impact he had on me. High School sports are great.
