Eagle Scouts

I went to London on Friday... Stephen (another LT) and myself were invited to a reception to honor all the scouts that have earned the rank of Eagle in the last year who live in the London area. Stephen has been involved with the scout troop on base since he got here and is an Eagle himself. The reception was held at the US Embassy and the guest speaker was the Supreme Commander of Naval Forces in Europe. It was fun to go to a BSA event in the UK. I haven't really done much with scouts since I got out of high school so it was good to be around a room full of Eagle Scouts and to say and hear the Law and Oath again(yes I still have them memorized). There was close to 20 boys in the London area that earned the rank of Eagle in the last year. And after talking with a few of them, they seemed like really good kids. Most Eagle Scouts are... but I must admit... just as with everything else... a few bad seeds slip through and give us all a bad name once in a while. Anyway... it was a fun trip and I think it was enough to convince me to get more involved with the Boy Scouts again this fall and if time allows... maybe even this summer. I still think it's cool that I can take evening trips to London if I want too. :-P

Horse Back Riding

I went horse back riding in Wales this weekend. I was told we were going riding in the mountains. These weren't like any mountains I have ever seen... of course I have been spoiled by the Rockies. These mountains seemed more like giant hills to me. Don't get me wrong, the country side was very beautiful but different. The beauty in this country side came from the emerald green pastures with sheep grazing and lambs playing. The beauty was in the babbling brooks and the blue skys dotted with puffy white clouds. The beauty was the landscape being divided by fence rows that were grown over with vines, bushes and trees because they had been there for centuries. The beauty was the peacefulness that comes with being miles away from the noise of city streets and highways, and the 800 year old abbey that stood out amongst the many farms that dotted the landscape. Taking this all in while riding on the back of Jim, my horse, made for an awesome day.
